Tenderfresh Butcher was established 25 years ago, however, the butcher trade for Edmund Azzopardi goes back farther than that. The trade, passion and craft were inherited from one generation to another – with his father being a trained butcher in Australia during his youth. After Edmund and his brother Mario learned the tricks of the trade, they spread their wings to start off on their own venture.
Innovation Through Creativity
Edmund Azzopardi believes in the art of creating food for others. Through his expertise and knowledge in making sausages, burgers, beef olives and Christmas and Easter dinners, he has learned many tricks of the trade along the way. Thanks to this, he has mastered the craft and trade behind creating burgers and sausages, which is why he provides his creations to numerous catering establishments across the island. These foods include bratwursts, German sausages, Asian meats, burgers and gourmet sausages.
The two opened the first butcher shop operating within a supermarket in Malta – Smart Supermarket. Besides being butchers at Smart, the two also owned a factory used for the importation, manufacturing and distribution of meat across the island. Needless to say, the two instantly understood that necessity is the mother of innovation. As life in Malta became more fast-paced, they invented the first ready-to-cook butcher shop product in Malta, the stuffed pork belly – 22 years ago.
The two innovative brothers did not only usher the ready-to-cook meal trend on the island, but they also opened the doors for other local butchers to set shop within local supermarkets – a tradition which took steady footing in May of 1994.
Edmund and Mario worked as a team and managed their factory and supermarket-based butcher shop for around 22 years. Following their departure from Smart Supermarket, the two went on their separate ways – with Edmond establishing Tenderfresh Butcher.
Humble Beginnings
Tenderfresh Butcher is Edmund’s passion – while the shop was downscaled in size, one can easily see that the artfulness, zeal and flair for innovation have grown tremendously. Edmund offers the same phenomenal family recipes he has been providing the island with for the past 25 years. As hands-on workers, he and his team pride themselves in the fact that they do everything by hand at Tenderfresh Butcher – from the bratwurst to the burgers and ready-cooked meals.
Being an innovative individual who’s always seeking new ways to improve and conceive new creations, Edmund has now introduced new ready-cooked products, a range of mouthwatering lovingly cooked meals.
Tenderfresh Butcher has imported sauces and marinades from Verstegen for the last 18 years and distributes them over the islands to numerous butcher shops and catering establishments.
